Borderlands 3 is scheduled for release on Sept. 13 on PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One.

 

Ever since Borderlands 3 was first released, discussions of the Cross-play chatter have revolved around it. Back in April, Pitchford tweeted that his team has "a very keen interest in cross-platform play." But a new tweet from Pitchford confirms that there has not been enough interest in the feature to make it available at Borderlands 3.Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has confirmed that Borderlands 3 will not support cross-platform play when it launches on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on 13th September, despite previously calling the feature "a pre-requisite". 

His statement came after Gearbox released a teaser inviting players to a "celebration of togetherness." Featuring a lot of guns, trippy visuals, and the game's various playable Vault Hunters all dance around, Beyond that, there was no news regarding the game, despite the initial expectations given the teaser.

With crossplay slowly but surely becoming more normalized across the industry, some may see this as a disappointment for a shooter series which has historically emphasized cooperative play. This is a shame, considering the recent push for games such as Fortnite, Dragon Quest Builders 2, and Minecraft, all of which offer cross-platform multiplayer games. 

 

Pitchford didn't completely rule out crossplay, however, saying, "We are committed to supporting cross-play for Borderlands 3 with our partners as soon as practicable after launch." We'll have to wait and see if frontier 3 follows up after release.
