Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Runs on a New Engine

Time: 2019-07-03

The long-awaited next installment to the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series was finally confirmed on May 30 as a single player teaser trailer was released. it's being developed by Infinity Ward, with help from Raven Software and Beenox. Infinity Ward and Activision revealed that a new engine is powering this year's shooter. It's an engine that delivers photo-realistic visuals, and allows for more in-depth visual engineering. Fans are excited not only to hear about the future of Call of Duty, but they are also interested in knowing about what the new engine can do for the series.

We know little tidbits about the engine already, but a new interview from Infinity Ward revealed even more about what we can expect from it. They want the game to feel as realistic as possible, and this engine will certainly help out in that regard.

"We had to simulate a rainbow-like effect on the oil of the gun after you've cleaned it up," Infinity Ward said. "Translucent effects on the gun, ceramic effects, powder coating effects, elements of the magazines. We researched all of that. We made everything in the game look as good as they possibly can. The reflections, shadows, the ambient occlusion; all the bells and whistles."
"We performance capture tons of data, including detail like the wrinkles, the changes in tautness of the skin around the mouth when characters are talking or are excited. This is performance capture 2.0, where you're getting this additional level of detail.”

In the presentation, developers across Infinity Ward gave live in-game examples running on PlayStation 4 of the sorts of imagery players will see. It includes advanced photogrammetry, a new hybrid tile based streaming system, persistent volumetric lighting, physically based rendering, and more. Modern Warfare will also support 4K HDR, and on PC, DirectX Raytracing as well.

With all these effects making Call of Duty: Modern Warfare look better than any title before it, the game will still run at 60 FPS.

Eurogamer reports this engine has been in the works for at least five years, meaning a lot of fine-tuning has gone into this. However, there has yet to be any major information about multiplayer or a possible battle royale add-on for the next release within the Call of Duty franchise.
