Apex Legends cheaters will be matched up against each other

Time: 2019-07-18

To ensure the normal player's gaming experience, Apex Legends' cheat players will be quarantined and they will find that the surrounding gamers are both cheaters.

Respawn may have a particularly poetic way to exact justice on Apex Legends cheaters: give them a taste of their own medicine. The studio has revealed that its anti-cheating efforts will include matchmaking between detected cheaters and spam accounts. Their aim bots and hacks won't be much fun if they're playing against similarly dirty competitors.

As seen on the official “Apex Legends” Reddit, the developers posted their plan to use machine learning with these cheaters. With this system, the game itself would be able to adapt to cheating and hacking patterns to assist in detecting these players. This new matchmaking system is similar to the “Low Priority Queue” system used by Dota 2, League of Legends, and several other games, players who are caught cheating or spamming by the system will be separated from the standard player base and placed into games with other cheaters. As of now, Respawn Entertainment has quelled many 770,000 cheaters off the game since its efforts that started three months after game’s release.

In a post on Reddit, the developer highlighted what it’s working on as follows:
1. Using machine learning to create behavior models that detect and auto ban cheaters.
2. Requiring TFA in certain regions on high risk accounts.
3. Improving detection that identifies and bans new spam accounts before they are used.
4. Ongoing work to adapt to new cheats.
5. Matchmaking that matches detected cheaters and spammers together.
6. Investigating how people party up for matches. Even if you are not specifically using a cheat, partying up with cheaters is still cheating.
7. Increasing resources whether that be people or tech.

Cheaters may soon figure out that they are going up against other cheaters exclusively, and may then create a new account to get back to the live servers. However, as Redditor G00dcoffee pointed out, as they keep playing after being flagged as cheaters, Respawn will be able to collect data from them to improve its own anti-cheat measures.

However, even with the automation and increase in size of the anti-cheat team within Respawn, they still need the help of players to try and weed out the undesirables. If you encounter a cheater, you’re encouraged to report them here, preferably with video evidence, and Respawn will also allow you to report squadmates, if you’ve been dropped into a team with someone naughty.
